It is an original electric instrument, coming from the Cretan lute. The electric lute “marries” the Greek, Cretan reference to the modern electric sound. A new instrument is emerging to express the connection of local music sound identity to other music genres and references. Electric lute was implemented by Dimitris Sideris and Giannis Leventakis between December 2014 and March 2015, in Rethymno, Crete.
ACOUSTIC TO ELECTRIC
Electric Lute's role in Babel Trio was determinant for its development. The idea of an electric lute came about when Dimitris began tampering with the signal of the acoustic lute and distorting it with pedals and sound effects. The acoustic lute produced feedback when exposed to large acoustic intensities on stage. On the other hand, an electric instrument could showcase a lot better the new sound that was taking form; the sound of "Roots Electrified".
